Digital printing press printing custom coffee and food packaging film

// How Digital Printing Works

Your file is the printing plate

Every traditional printing method needs something physical made before the first bag prints — engraved drums, plates, dies. A digital press needs none of that: it reads your approved artwork file and lays the image down directly onto the packaging film. That one difference explains everything else about digital — the speed, the flexibility and the pricing.

01

Straight from file to press

Once your artwork is approved, it goes directly to the press. There is nothing to engrave, etch or mount first — which is why digital production runs at around 3 weeks and carries no setup charges.

02

Process colour builds everything

The press builds your artwork from process colour laid down in a single pass. Because no plate or drum is made per colour, the colour count is unlimited — gradients, photographic detail and subtle tonal work all print as designed.

03

Artwork can vary within a run

The press doesn’t care if bag 1 and bag 1,001 carry different artwork. That’s why a digital order can be split across multiple designs and SKUs — a house blend, a decaf and a seasonal special in one production run.

04

Refine before you commit

With no drums to re-engrave, design changes between runs cost nothing extra. Test artwork on a first run, adjust, and reprint the improved version — digital is the lowest-risk way to evolve your packaging.

05

Same standards as every method

Digitally printed bags are produced to the same food-safety standards as the rest of our range — we’ve been a BRCGS-certified supplier since long before digital presses were an option.

// Strengths & Trade-Offs

An honest fit-check

Digital is the right first press for most brands — but not for every brand. Here’s how to tell, plainly.

Choose digital printing when…
It’s your first full-colour custom run and you don’t want tooling costs
You’re printing multiple SKUs or designs in one order
Your artwork uses gradients, photography or fine detail
You expect the design to change — seasonal editions, test batches, evolving branding
You’re ordering roughly 2,000–10,000 units
Consider another method when…

You’re ordering 10,000+ units of stable artwork and want the lowest unit cost.

Rotogravure — up to 10 colours, cheapest per bag at scale →

You want a clean single-colour mark on a stock bag, from 1,000 units.

Hot foil stamping — one metallic or matte colour, ~3 weeks →

You need branded kraft bags fast, from just 500 units.

Short run in-house printing — printed in the UK on kraft stock bags →

// Cost Dynamics

Why digital prices the way it does

You pay per bag — nothing else

With no plates or drums to manufacture, there’s no tooling investment to recover. Your quote is the bag price, full stop — and no hidden charges appear later. That makes digital the easiest method to budget for a first run.

Colour count doesn’t move the price

On plate-based methods, every extra colour means extra tooling. On digital, a two-colour label and a full photographic wrap cost the same to set up: nothing. Design ambitious artwork without a cost penalty.

The honest crossover point

Because there’s no tooling to amortise, digital’s unit price stays fairly flat as volume grows — while rotogravure’s falls. From around 10,000 units of stable artwork, rotogravure usually works out cheaper per bag. We’ll tell you when you’ve reached that point.

// Artwork & Proofing

Checked in-house before anything prints

We’re not a design studio and we don’t create artwork from scratch — but nothing goes to press unchecked either.

01

Artwork on our cutter guides

We supply the cutter guide for your exact bag; your designer sets the artwork on it, so seams, gussets and the valve all land where they should.

02

In-house designer check

Our in-house designer checks every file and works with your designer daily on adjustments — resolution, bleed, panel alignment — until it’s print-ready.

03

Free digital proof

A digital proof is included with every order. Nothing prints until you approve it.

04

Printed proof on demand

Want to hold it first? Printed proofs are available on demand at an extra cost — worth considering for colour-critical brands.

// Delivery

Shipping, quoted separately — and flexible

Sea freight

The most cost-effective way to receive your order — the default choice when your launch date allows.

Airfreight

Around 10 days when you need stock sooner — useful for tight launch windows.

Split shipments

Airfreight part of your order to start selling, with the rest following by sea. Ask for current options in your quote.

Production (~3 weeks) runs from artwork approval; shipping is quoted separately so you can choose the trade-off that suits your dates. Your order lands at our UK warehouse, is quality-checked, then delivered ready to fill.

// Who Uses Digital

Built for brands in motion

First-time launchers

Roasters moving off stock bags onto their first fully branded run — 2,000 units, no tooling risk, and a design they can still change next time.

Multi-SKU ranges

Brands with a house blend, single origins and a decaf — one digital order split across designs keeps every SKU branded without four separate minimums.

Seasonal & limited editions

Christmas blends, competition lots, collaborations — artwork that lives for one season prints economically when there’s no tooling to pay off.

Design testers

Brands refining their look — run it, see it on shelf, adjust, reprint. Digital makes iteration affordable in a way engraved-drum printing never can.
